Our AVON family leads the fight against breast cancer by walking, buying pink ribbon products and now by joining the Love/Avon Army of Women. Together we will go beyond a cure and end breast cancer.

I am registered at www.armyofwomen.org. You should too :) The Love/Avon Army of Women launches in 32 days.

You can join the movement to go beyond a cure...

Over $4 Billion dollars have been raised for breast cancer research in the U.S. by various breast cancer organizations over the past two decades.

As a result, great progress has been made in treatment and survival rates. But we still don't understand what causes breast cancer or how to prevent it.

The key to ending breast cancer is to stop it before it starts-and to do that researchers need to study women. It’s time for YOU to partner with scientists and move us beyond a cure to eradicating breast cancer once and for all.
Join the Love/Avon Army of Women. The goal to recruit one million women starts with one-YOU.

Before you leave or look away...I encourage you to read this whole thing. I know its very long, but I think its important to read.

A time comes in your life when you finally get it ... when, in the midst of all your fears and insanity, you stop dead in your tracks and somewhere the voice inside your head cries out ENOUGH!!!

Enough fighting and crying or struggling to hold on. And, like a child quieting down after a blind tantrum, your sobs begin to subside, you shudder once or twice, you blink back your tears and begin to look at the world through new eyes.

This is your awakening. You realize it's time to stop hoping and waiting for something to change...or for happiness, safety and security to come galloping over the next horizon. You come to terms with the fact that you are neither Prince Charming or Cinderella and that in the real world there aren't always fairy tale endings (or beginnings for that matter) and that any guarantee of "happily ever after" must begin with you...and in the process a sense of serenity is born of acceptance.

2002 Jeep Wrangler Sahara Sport Utility 4x4

The Jeepsters story.
I'm the 2nd owner and I've put 20k miles on it in the past 2 years commuting to Redmond/Seattle. This Jeep has been babied and taken well care of with regular maintenance and the following extras: The tires and wheels were purchased when I bought it. I put a 2 inch lift on it as well as a custom intake. I also put Jeep speaker wedges, a CD player and an amp. The bikini top for the summer was bought soon after and it's wicked fun with no doors or top in the summer.

But the bright side?

I'm looking at this little diddy tomorrow... http://seattle.craigslist.org/est/car/672270021.html. Also, my bank (who I love, duh) has approved me to go ahead and get it if I want it!! Bad news? It's a stick, and I have very little knowledge of how to drive a stick. The things a girl does to get the save some money on gas. Besides, lot's of people have offered to help me learn to drive my new commuter.

What would you accept if you were the seller to let me take it tomorrow (If I really want it)?

That 2nd job I was talking about..

Selling AVON.

I can't live without their products so I figured there's more out there like me, so why not?

I started for $10 and became an E-Rep too, click here to check out my site.

I recently bought my mom and I the 5 Minute Beauty Collection as Mothers Day gifts from here, I seriously use everything in it. Honestly, $24 for all that? Heck, yeah I was in. I didn't have a lot of cash and I knew my mom would love something like it too.

drama
I start my insurance prep class tomorrow and it lasts 8 hours for 4 days in a row. It's going to suck. I hope I get a long enough lunch so I can get some food since I have none at home. I think M and I may head out for some groceries today. He needs some more dinner stuff anyway.

I've been super lazy today and luckily it's not bothering M too much. He's up eating some grapes and apples right now and I think he's about done since he's just playing with it now.

I can't wait until next weekend!

I'm going to make this public for a reason

  • May. 22nd, 2007 at 4:32 PM
hooray
I get so fucking tired of that excuse
Seriously, I'm fucking tired of hearing people whine about how we shouldn't talk about the risks of formula because it might make moms who can't breastfeed feel guilty. The assumption apparently is that a LOT of women "can't", and if we say anything about the risks, then we're being mean to them.

I get sick of hearing it because our definitions of "can't" in this country seem to cover a lot more territory than in areas like, say, Sweden, where there's a 97% breastfeeding rate. Do I really believe that only 3% of Swedish women are incapable of nursing, yet 60% of North Americans are biologically incapable of it? No, I don't. "Can't" in this continent, in the vast majority of cases, actually means "won't" or "didn't want to".

In which case, they DESERVE to feel guilty. They deserve to feel guilty for the same reason that a mother who smokes around her baby should feel guilty, or one who lets her baby sit in a crappy diaper because she doesn't like changing diapers. If your parenting decisions are increasing your child's risk of harm BY CHOICE, you should feel guilty about it.

Not giving women the straight facts about formula-feeding is disrespectful; it's treating someone like a child who needs to be protected and coddled, rather than treating them as an adult who is capable of making an informed decision. Why are we trying to be the gatekeepers, keeping honest and straightforward information from people who need it in order to make informed decisions, upon the idea that it is our responsibility to keep them from *possibly* feeling bad? To me, it's incredibly disrespectful to deny someone the chance to make an informed decision simply because we think that maybe they aren't grown-up enough to handle and process their own emotions.

Furthermore, I've known mothers who legitimately were unable to breastfeed. Of the ones I've talked to about it, they don't feel guilty about it - they feel ANGRY! They know they tried their best and they feel angry and disappointed that they missed out on nursing. They don't feel guilt, because they know they tried their best. The ones who feel guilt are the ones who know that they didn't try their hardest, or the ones who never tried at all.

And, to add even MORE to that - if a woman feels strongly about breastfeeding, even if she is incapable of producing milk herself, it is possible to use an SNS, which is a bottle that hangs around the neck and is attached to a small tube that runs to the nipple, so the baby can be at the breast while eating the food through the tube leading from the bottle. It is often possible to find mothers who are willing to donate extra milk (I donated milk to two other babies myself; although see my note below regarding milk donation). Alternately, if donor milk is unavailable, you can use formula in the bottle; at least that way the baby is getting the physical-development and emotional benefits of being at the breast, even though they won't be getting the antibodies and other compounds in breastmilk.

I also hate this idea that unless you can fully breastfeed, it's not worth doing it at all. Almost all women can make SOME breastmilk, and some milk is far better than none, it will still confer some of the protective benefits. Even women who have had reduction mammoplasty or breast implants can usually breastfeed to some extent, and the milk ducts often regrow with use (which means they can make more milk with each subsequent pregnancy). Women who say that they switched to formula because they "couldn't make enough milk" do not get a pass; that is not a good enough reason to stop nursing. Breastfeed your baby as much as possible and then finish off with formula; your baby deserves whatever breastmilk you can make, even if it's only a little bit, it will still be helpful.

So please, I'm fucking done with hearing about how telling the truth about formula is some kind of manipulative bullshit designed to make poor innocent mamas feel guilty about their biological inability to make milk. Stating the facts in a clear and straight-forward manner is not manipulative, it's not bullshit, and it may get results where a warm and fluffy "breastfeeding is best!" message may not. People who are having babies are grown-up enough to hear the truth and then make their own informed decision, and the truth is that formula is not good for babies.

PSA about milk donation: If someone is looking to provide donor milk for their baby, please ensure that the person planning to donate has had a full spectrum of blood tests, to test for any disease that is transmittable through breastmilk. Breastmilk donation is a lovely and wonderful thing, but we need to be aware of the fact that this is a bodily fluid, and precautions need to be taken to ensure that the milk is disease-free.
